The Green Key award is the hospitality industry’s standard for excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation. As such, it is a coveted award for any sustainable hotel in Cyprus and abroad. This internationally recognized ecolabel represents a commitment by businesses that to adhere to the strict code of environmental regulations stipulated by the Foundation for Environmental Education. Rebecca Pierides, Director of the Churchill Hotel Management Ltd, which owns and operates the Crowne Plaza Limassol hotel said:

“Doing the right thing has always been one of the core values of our business. Becoming a more circular and sustainable business has been a focus for our team this year. It will continue to be a focus next year, as we continue to build on the great results achieved so far on our Journey To Tomorrow.

Last year we obtained our Silver Circular Standard accreditation from the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB). In securing our Green Key award this month, we were proud of the high number of guideline criteria we implemented, above and beyond the imperative criteria required to obtain the certification. Thereafter, our next goal is to obtain the Gold Circular Standard accreditation from OEB by Q1 2026. This third certification will further strengthen our position as a premium eco-friendly hotel in Cyprus.

However, to be a sustainable hotel in Cyprus is not without its challenges. Unfortunately, the supply chain and infrastructure are not yet there to support a sustainable and circular operational model.”
